Every piece is unique. No two slabs have the same veining, the same colour variation, the same texture. That means your home will look like nothing else on the street. You can’t say that about a fibre cement sheet that comes off a production line identical to ten thousand others.

Natural stone is also incredibly dense. It doesn’t absorb water the way rendered walls do. It doesn’t warp like timber. It doesn’t fade like painted surfaces. It doesn’t crack like concrete render when the ground shifts. It just sits there, doing its job, for decades.

The lifespan

This is where natural stone really separates itself from the pack. A properly installed natural stone cladding system will last the lifetime of the building. We’re talking 50 years, 60 years, 100 years. There are stone-clad buildings in Europe that are several centuries old and still look better than most new builds.

Compare that to:

  • Timber cladding: 15 to 25 years before it needs significant maintenance or replacement
  • Fibre cement: 25 to 40 years, depending on the product and installation
  • Vinyl cladding: 20 to 40 years, but it becomes brittle and fades over time

Compare that to timber cladding, which is a fire liability in bushfire zones. Or vinyl cladding, which melts and releases toxic gases. Or aluminium composite panels with a polyethylene core, which have been linked to some of the worst cladding fires in recent history.

Fibre Cement Cladding: The Common Alternative

Fibre cement is probably the most common cladding material in new Australian homes. Products like HardiePlank, HardiePanel, and HardieTex are everywhere. And for good reason. They’re affordable, widely available, and reasonably durable.

What it is

Fibre cement is a composite material made from cement, cellulose fibre, sand, and water. It’s formed into sheets or planks and can be textured to mimic weatherboard, panelling, or even a rendered finish.

Where it works

Fibre cement is a solid choice for budget-conscious builds. It’s non-combustible, which is important in bushfire areas. It’s termite-resistant. It won’t rot. It’s available in a range of profiles and can be painted any colour.

For a standard suburban home on a budget, fibre cement does the job. It’s not going to give you the same visual impact as natural stone, but it’s a functional, code-compliant cladding system.

Where it falls short

The problem with fibre cement is that it’s still a cement-based product. It absorbs water. Not a lot, but enough that over time, it can cause issues. In coastal areas, the salt air accelerates the breakdown of the surface finish. In areas with high ground movement, fibre cement sheets can crack at the joints. And the painted finish needs to be reapplied every 10 to 15 years, which adds to the long-term cost.

Fibre cement also lacks the visual depth of natural stone. It’s a flat, uniform surface. Even when it’s textured to look like something else, you can tell it’s a manufactured product. It doesn’t have the variation, the character, or the presence of real stone.

Timber Cladding: The Traditional Look

Timber cladding has been used in Australian homes for over a century. There’s something undeniably warm and inviting about a timber-clad facade. It’s organic, it’s tactile, and it ages in a way that many people find attractive.

What it is

Timber cladding is exactly what it sounds like. Boards or batts of timber fixed to the exterior frame. It can be installed horizontally as weatherboard, vertically as battens, or in various other patterns.

Common species used in Australia include:

  • Western Red Cedar: Beautiful grain, naturally resistant to decay, but expensive
  • Spotted Gum: Hard, dense, fire-resistant, but heavy and difficult to work with
  • Blackbutt: Popular for its pale colour and straight grain, moderately fire-resistant
  • Treated Pine: Cheap, but requires ongoing maintenance and has a limited lifespan

Where it works

Where it falls short

The problem with timber cladding is maintenance. Timber moves. It expands and contracts with changes in humidity. It cracks. It warps. It fades. And if it’s not protected with a finish, it will grey and deteriorate within a few years.

Even with regular maintenance, timber cladding has a limited lifespan. You’re looking at 15 to 25 years before you need to start replacing boards. And in bushfire-prone areas, timber cladding is a serious liability. Most timber species won’t meet BAL requirements without additional treatment or protection.

Timber is also vulnerable to termites. Even hardwoods that are naturally termite-resistant can be attacked over time. And treated pine, while cheap, requires chemical treatment that some homeowners are uncomfortable with.

Vinyl Cladding: The Budget Option

Vinyl cladding is common in North America but less so in Australia. It’s a PVC-based product that’s moulded into planks or sheets and fixed to the exterior frame.

Where it works

Vinyl cladding is cheap. That’s really its only advantage. It’s also lightweight, easy to install, and available in a range of colours and profiles. It doesn’t need painting, which saves on maintenance.

Where it falls short

Vinyl cladding has a lot of problems. It becomes brittle over time, especially in Australia’s high-UV environment. It fades. It cracks. It warps in extreme heat. And when it does fail, it’s difficult to match the colour of replacement boards to the existing cladding.

Vinyl is also a plastic product. It melts in a fire and releases toxic fumes. It’s not suitable for bushfire-prone areas. It’s also not as impact-resistant as other materials. A stray cricket ball or a ladder leaning against the wall can crack it.

In Australia, vinyl cladding has never really taken off, and for good reason. It’s a short-term solution that creates long-term problems.

Rendered Walls: The Common Default

Rendered walls are the default for a lot of Australian homes. A cement or acrylic render is applied to the exterior walls, creating a smooth or textured finish that can be painted.

Where it works

Render works well on homes with masonry or concrete walls. It provides a smooth, uniform finish that can be painted any colour. It’s also relatively cheap, especially for large, simple wall surfaces.

Where it falls short

The problem with rendered walls is cracking. Render is a rigid material. When the ground moves, when the timber frame shrinks, when the temperature changes, the render cracks. And once it cracks, water gets in. And once water gets in, you get damp, mould, and structural damage.

Render also needs to be repainted every 10 to 15 years. And if the render fails, the cost of repairing it is significant. You can’t just patch it. You often need to strip it back to the substrate and start again.

Rendered walls also lack the visual interest of natural stone. It’s a flat, uniform surface. It doesn’t have the texture, the depth, or the character of real stone.

Aluminium Composite Panels: The Modern Option

Aluminium composite panels (ACPs) are a modern cladding system made from two thin sheets of aluminium bonded to a core material, usually polyethylene.

Where it works

ACPs are lightweight, easy to install, and available in a range of colours and finishes. They’re often used in commercial buildings and modern architectural designs.

Where it falls short

The problem with ACPs is fire safety. The polyethylene core is highly combustible. In a fire, it melts and burns, releasing toxic fumes. This has led to some of the worst cladding fires in recent history, including the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

In Australia, ACPs with a polyethylene core have been banned or restricted in several states. And even where they’re still permitted, there’s growing concern about their safety.

ACPs are also not as durable as other materials. They dent easily. They fade over time. And when they do fail, they’re difficult to repair. You usually need to replace entire panels.

Natural stone cladding is more expensive upfront than most other materials. But it’s important to look at the whole picture, not just the initial cost.

Rendered walls need to be repainted every 10 to 15 years, and they may need repairs along the way. Over 30 years, you’re looking at $100 to $200 per square metre in maintenance and repairs.

Natural stone cladding needs nothing. Zero maintenance costs. Over 50 years, the total cost of ownership is often lower than fibre cement or timber, even though the upfront cost is higher.

The Verdict: Which Cladding Should You Choose?

There’s no single right answer. The best cladding for your home depends on your budget, your aesthetic preferences, your location, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.

But if you can afford it, natural stone cladding is the best long-term investment you can make. It lasts longer, looks better, requires less maintenance, and adds more value to your home than any other cladding material.

It’s not the cheapest option upfront. But it’s the cheapest option over the life of the building. And it’s the only option that will still look as good in 50 years as it does today.
